Critical Illness Insurance

Should you take out Critical illness insurance? Is critical illness insurance cover affordable? Can polyneuropathy, myopathy or neuropathy be covered?

Critical illness insurance cover

Critical illness insurance is a valuable product either on its own or when combined with life insurance. When you take out critical illness insurance cover you will be provided with a lump sum should you suffer or be diagnosed with one of a variety of critical illnesses and survive the occurrence or diagnosis for a specific period.

Critical illness insurance is often combined with life insurance quotes to help with payment protection insurance. The affordable critical illness insurance cover recommended could save money but more importantly you will get the right protection. Our IFA can obtain critical illness insurance quotes for UK residents from many critical illness insurance providers and will compare the price of the critical illness insurance policy and the critical illnesses that the critical illness insurance cover protects against.

Polyneuropathy, myopathy, neuropathy

Polyneuropathy, myopathy and neuropathy refer to degenerative conditions of the neural network (nerves) e.g. as a result of diabetes. Although these conditions are not specifically covered under critical illness insurance, if you suffer from a critical illness that causes these symptoms then cover may be available

cancer

Cancer

Cancer is covered under a critical illness insurance policy. Cancer is possibly the most common critical illness. Cancer is the most feared critical illness. We do not approve of policies protecting against cancer only if they are called critical illness policies. A 'critical illness insurance' policy offering cancer only cover is very limited. Advice on critical illness insurance and cancer should be provided by independent insurance experts not a mass-marketing company. Should you take out 'critical illness insurance' for cancer only? Not if we can quote an affordable critical illness insurance policy.

Information about  illness frequency

When considering if you need critical illness insurance cover, the following information may help

UK survival rates

The important feature of critical illness insurance cover is the fact that many people after a critical illness survive so can benefit from the lump-sum benefits of the insurance policy.

in a typical year in the UK:

Critical Illness Insurance: Heart Attack: 330,000 people have a heart attack: 77% live more than five years
Critical Illness Insurance: Cancer: 280,000 people are diagnosed with cancer : 40% live more than 5 years
Critical Illness Insurance: Stroke: 100,000 people will have a stroke : 55% live more than five years

The critical point  is that after an illness quality of life may be reduced - hence the need for critical illness insurance.  The cover provided under the insurance policy could be used to:-

  1. Pay for care
  2. Pay for child minders
  3. Pay for home help to clean the house and prepare food
Typical costs to consider when taking out a critical illness insurance policy in the UK: For a carer to visit for two hours each weekday to help with washing, dressing and preparation of breakfast - £149.80 per week. If care is needed seven days a week the cost would increase to £245.62 per week

Alternatively the lump sum paid under the insurance cover could be used to pay of a mortgage or loans or even to 'enjoy' the remaining time e.g. world cruise, visit relatives etc

It is critical that you realise that no insurance cover provides protection against every condition - which is why we have linked up with an Independent Financial Advisor who will make the best recommendation possible based on your demands and needs.
