Critical Illness InsuranceTypes of benefitCritical illness insurance policies have two main types of benefit - death and critical illness - but may vary as to how the benefits are paid. Death benefitInsurers will pay this benefit if you die or satisfy their definition of a terminal illness during the benefit term. There may be circumstances when they would not pay - always read the exclusions section of the key facts document or ask our IFA about exclusions that may apply on a critical illness insurance policy. Terminal illness coverInsurers may include this at no extra cost with both the death and death or earlier critical illness benefits. They will pay your benefit if you satisfy their definition of a terminal illness by being diagnosed, by an attending Consultant, as having a condition where life expectancy is no greater than 12 months after your diagnosis, or until the end of the benefit term if earlier. Death or earlier critical illness benefitThey will pay this benefit if you:

There may be exclusions of cover as before Critical illness benefitThey will pay this benefit if you satisfy our definition of one of a range of critical illnesses or disabilities. To qualify for a claim you must survive for 14 days after you satisfy their definition of a critical illness. If you choose critical illness benefit on its own, they will not pay death benefit. However, if you die before you make a critical illness claim, they may pay a small benefit. Again there may be some exclusions when they won't pay the benefits Critical illness cover typesWhen you take out death or earlier critical illness benefit or critical illness benefit you can choose which critical illness cover type you want from the five listed below. B The full list of critical illnesses plus total permanent disability benefit based on the work tasks definition. C The full list of critical illnesses with no total permanent disability benefit. D Total permanent disability benefit on its own based on the own occupation definition. E Total permanent disability benefit on its own based on the work tasks definition.
