Online insurance for house buildings and contents

A quick guide to sums insured

The buildings of your home should be insured for the total cost of rebuilding - this includes debris removal and architects fees. If you are unsure as to the rebuilding costs of your home then you can request a policy with an inbuilt sum insured - typically £250,000 or £500,000. Please note that the rebuilding cost has very little relationship to the purchase cost.

The contents should also be insured for the full cost of replacing brand new. Our insurance can be done either on a declared sum insured or, as is more common these days, on a fixed sum insured that should be adequate for most houses. Typical values are £30,000 - £50,000. We can of course provide insurance  for mid and high net worth properties - in many cases these types of property should not be insured through the internet but obtained through an insurance broker - who can provide experience and a personal service.

You should also consider whether you need additional covers in your insurance these could include: all risks cover on specified jewelry and valuables, bikes, sports equipment, legal expenses.

We appreciate that it is easy to obtain prices for home insurance online, however if you are not an insurance expert (who is) then there are serious pitfalls that you could fall into. As your home is your largest and most valuable asset then it makes sense to get proper advice and regrettably buying online insurance are not the way to do so.
