Motorcycle insurance is compulsory in the UK if you want to ride your bike on the road. As brokers we have access to two online motorcycle insurance quotation systems that offer a wide range of cheap quotations. Both companies are brokers that are well known for looking after your demands and needs- whatever type of motor bike you have.

Cover available  motorcycle insurance cover
  • Third party only

Usually cheapest motorcycle insurance premium. Provides cover to protect you should you be involved in an incident and another person is injured or property damaged. If you did not know, the phrase 'third party' refers to anyone who is not involved in the actual insurance contract - the insurance company is the first party to the contract and the policyholder the second party to the contract. All motorcycle insurance policies provide third party only cover.

  • Third party, fire and theft

Motorcycle insurance is often quoted on a third party, fire and theft basis. As this name implies the basic third party insurance policy is extended to provide cover for the bike against theft or fire damage. Please note

  1. There will always be an excess. For large motorcycles the excess can be very large and a voluntary excess, if available, increases this further. Norwich Union allows a £1,000 excess option.

  2. Theft cover may be restricted unless the vehicle is kept in a garage at night (not a locked shed!) or if the bike is not fitted with an immobiliser or datatag.

  3. If you are very young a third party fire and theft policy may have an excess of more than the value of your bike - so please check that you need this extra cover on your motorcycle insurance policy.

  • Comprehensive

A comprehensive motorcycle insurance policy is much more expensive than an equivalent private car policy. In addition to fire and theft damage the policy extends to include accidental damage to the bike. This cover is expensive (especially for the younger drivers) so if you are young it is unlikely that you would want your policy extended to comprehensive cover.

License information motorcycle insurance licence requirements

Motorcycle insurance companies will probably ask for a copy of your driving licence. Before you can drive on UK roads you need a driving licence. Not only that you will need to obtain a 'certificate of basic training' (CBT) before a  company will issue cover. (In the past some companies would issue cover giving time for the rider to complete the CBT only to find that they did not bother!)

After obtaining the CBT you have to decide the sort of licence you wish to obtain.

You may wish to take a normal route allowing you to drive restricted vehicles for a period after passing the test (compulsory for the younger driver) take a restricted licence or, if you are old enough, take a Fasttrack course. Many companies will request a copy of your driving licence.

Claims and Convictions claims and convictions for motorcycle insurance

For motorcycle insurance, as with all policies, it is a strict duty on the insured to declare any facts that could affect the rating of the policy. Some (but not all) facts could be:-

  • Details of all claims or incidents which could have given rise to a claim - even if not claimed for or for which there was no cover in force e.g. a theft when cover was third party only
  • Details of all convictions (not just motor) not 'spent' under the rehabilitation of offenders act)

(The general rule for motor convictions is that a conviction is spent after 5 years NOT 4 or 3 as the fact that the conviction is removed from the driving licence does NOT mean it is spent.)

  • Unusual uses for the vehicle e.g. Pizza delivery, courier service, on hire
  • Interestingly enough all policies are rated on the age of the youngest driver so there is never any benefit in trying to insure the bike in a parent's name when it is the son's bike.
