General travel insurance information

A key fact about travel insurance is that you should declare all material facts - these material facts will include, as well as the location where you are going to and when you are going, such facts as whether there are any pre-existing conditions of the travelers or any close relatives. This can be important as failure to disclose material facts can result in your policy being declared void or a claim not paid.

You should also check to see whether any activities you are doing are covered. Policies vary, but if there is any degree of danger or physical contact, or if you intend to work then it is vital that you confirm that your policy covers you.

In today's uncertain times it may be well to check to see if your policy covers failure of your supplier due to bankruptcy - as many people found out to their cost when XL ceased trading. We have one policy (PJH) that provide cover as standard and can advise that we offer a stand-alone policy to provide supplier failure cover (also known as scheduled airline failure).

Another fact you should look for is the excess on a policy - the excess is the amount you have to pay towards each claim and on some internet policies it can be as much as £200.00 per person per section - which means that for instance a claim on loss of baggage for four people would mean that a £800 excess would apply. Of course the policies we offer have much lower excesses (and they can be deleted) and often there is a maximum excess per incident - all of which means that if you take out a policy with us and make a claim you could lose a lot less money than some providers.

Finally - you should check that policy limits are adequate for your needs. Luggage cover is usually restricted to £1,000 or £1,500 and is NOT intended to include valuables e.g. rolex watches (more of which have been stolen on holiday than have ever been manufactured!)  but rather clothing and personal effects and is usually 'indemnity' i.e. a deduction for wear and tear. Our general advice is to cover expensive items on your house policy.
