Travel Insurance to 'Europe'
Overview of travel insurance
You need travel insurance when going to Europe. This is
very important, especially if you are over 65 as you could face
substantial bills for medical treatment and/ or returning home by air
ambulance. This applies whether you need long stay travel insurance or just insurance for a
family holiday.
Is the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) Enough
The EHIC (Successor to the E111) confirms that you are
entitled to medical treatment in a state-run hospital in the European
Union. It does NOT cover, for instance, the cost of a flight home,
cancellation costs if family have to return earlier or later.
One advantage of the EHIC is that some travel insurance
companies will remove or reduce the medical expenses excess on their
policy if treatment is made via the EHIC scheme.
Countries regarded by travel insurance as 'Europe'
As well as the EU, travel insurance companies often include other countries. However not all travel insurance companies include the same countries. This
means that you must be careful that the travel insurance you select does include the
appropriate country in its definition.
As we are travel insurance brokers we are agents for many companies and thus
know which ones include additional countries in their rating. Examples of countries
classified by some of our insurance companies are shown below.
-
The continent of Europe west of the
Urals
-
Mediterranean Islands
-
Iceland, The Canary Islands, The Azores
-
Turkey in Asia, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt
-
Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya
Are travel insurance premiums the same for all
Europe?
No: Whilst some travel insurance companies
regard all of Europe as one area, some companies are now splitting Europe
into two distinct regions. For instance some may regard Spain, Turkey,
Cyprus and the Canary Islands as slightly more expensive due to higher
than average medical bills. Other
travel insurance companies extend 'Europe', as mentioned, to include
countries bordering the Mediterranean - including African ones.
