Travel Insurance for the over 65 and 70 with medical conditions

Finding travel insurance when you are over 70 and have possibly serious medical conditions is difficult and expensive. We now have insurance companies able to cover the over 70 for trips up to 12 months (to age 85) and for 3 months if older. Annual travel insurance is also available on our scheme up to 74 - maximum 120 days/ trip.

Please note that the Redwood scheme (below) is currently unavailable. Quotes for over 65 travel insurance  are available online - with full details of contacting a medical screening line to obtain cover - but we recommend contacting us on 01207 509446 where we will do our best to help, with a wider range of policies.

Our preferred travel insurance for the over 70 is the Redwood Scheme. This offers three levels of cover: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

The Bronze scheme is the cheapest travel insurance for the over 70 we use. Rates can be 65% of those available elsewhere and the 100 excess can be removed for the additional premium of 10%. Many over 70 travel insurance policies have substantial excesses - especially those compared online, and may not cover medical conditions anyway. This policy is suitable for most standard holidays.

The silver scheme affords reasonable travel insurance for the over 70 - with just a 50 excess whilst the Gold contract was rated as 5 star cover by defaqto in 2012 and includes unlimited cover for medical conditions. The excess can be deleted again by paying a 10% premium but often the increase in premium exceeds the excess - especially for long stays abroad such as USA or Australia.

How medical conditions are rated for the over 70.

We have outsourced a human-based medical screening line to provide quotes for the over 70 who want the travel insurance. Calling at a sensible time (including week-ends) connects to our experienced operatives who will ensure that the appropriate questions are asked and the correct additional premium quoted, based on the responses. (We recommend that a quote is first obtained online).

Medical conditions are assessed through a proprietary algorithm called Healix (which many insurers use, not just for the over 70). The programme asks for information not only of medical conditions and treatment undertaken but also ages and countries to be visited (naturally extended stays in the USA are more inherently risky than a weak in Blackpool) and returns a value that equates to the required premium load to cover the medical conditions. There is no upper limit on these values, however quotes are available for values up to 7, which is quite generous.

Should the over 70 pay to have pre-existing medical conditions covered on their travel insurance?

Emphatically yes. Whilst there is no requirement to cover medical conditions for travel insurance, the over 70 should consider that, as they are over retirement age, complications may occur from existing medical conditions and these complications would not be covered, unless the original conditions are also covered. Since the cost of having medical conditions treated abroad (especially in America/ Canada, there is no way we could recommend skipping on this essential cover).

The importance of disclosing information on medical conditions

It is vital that pre-existing medical conditions are disclosed by the over 70 when buying travel insurance. It is also important that you check that your travel insurance policy covers them. When you obtain a quote through our travel insurance quotation system you will be provided with contact details  - we also offer facilities for you to do the screening yourself and buy cover for all but the most severe conditions.

Examples of pre-existing Medical Conditions we can cover

  • Angina

  • Asthma & respiratory

  • Arthritis

  • Cancer (general and breast cancer)

  • Depression, anxiety and stress disorders

  • Diabetes / Diabetic

  • Disabled conditions / disabilities

  • Epilepsy / epileptic medical conditions

  • Heart Bypass

  • Heart attack

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol

  • Hypertension

  • Stroke

  • High risk

No matter what medical conditions you may have, our travel insurance policies may cover them on referral, - usually at standard premiums. However our travel insurance underwriters may be unable to cover them. In that case we can offer a travel insurance for your condition provided: a) You do not have a terminal prognosis in six months b) you are not travelling against doctor's advice and c) you are not travelling to obtain treatment for that condition.

If the Redwood Travel insurance policy for over 70 travel insurance is not suitable

The Redwood contract is almost certainly the best travel insurance product for the over 70. However if a traveller is over 85 then they cannot take out the policy. In that case we have a quote system that offers travel insurance for the over 85, or over 90 (there is no upper age limit), however it is not possible to cover more than 3 months for a single trip.

If you want travel insurance for a single person in your party.

Many people are unaware that their own travel insurance policy may not cover additional costs if someone over 70 going with them falls ill! We always recommend travel insurance be arranged to cover all members who are to travel together. Thus the travel insurance company will protect everyone as they know about the condition.

Age limits

A travel insurance policy to cover people with medical conditions for up to 12 months is launched on April 1st 2012. Redwood travel insurance covers single trips for people aged to 85 (and yes 365 days is available for an 85 year old) and annual travel insurance up to 74 (90 days a trip). Quotes are available here although medical screening is required.

Length of trips

Long stay travel insurance for the over 70, usually defined as travel for more than 30 days is available. Cover is usually similar to a normal, single trip, travel insurance policy. However there is a variation: backpacker travel insurance, is suitable for students in their gap year who really only need cover for medical expenses, loss of passport and possibly some luggage cover. The premiums for this are very cheap due to the limited nature of the benefits provided.

Internet policies

Although you are buying this product online, we would like to emphasise that we are a broker and, as such, the policies we offer are substantially better than those you will buy by going through a price comparison website. On those sites you will find policies with excesses over 200 per person per claim (e.g. if you go with a family and all your luggage is stolen then you could find that you have to pay 800 towards the claim - 200 for you, 200 for your wife/ partner and similar amounts for the children. The reduction of cover on these sites gives serious cause for concern as customers won't realise the costs they have to pay themselves until they make a claim. Our excesses, by the way, range from 35 to 65 in most cases, with limits on a family claim and in many cases you can delete them i.e. have no excess at all.
